Which citizenship test will I take in 2026, the 2008 or the 2025 version?

It depends on your filing date, not your interview date. If you filed Form N-400 before October 20, 2025, you take the 2008 test: 10 questions from a bank of 100, with 6 correct to pass. If you filed on or after October 20, 2025, you take the 2025 test: 20 questions from a bank of 128, with 12 correct to pass.

What are the requirements to become a U.S. citizen?

Most applicants must be at least 18, be a lawful permanent resident for five years (or three years if married to and living with a U.S. citizen the whole time), show physical presence and continuous residence, demonstrate good moral character, and pass the English and civics tests. Military service and a few other situations can change these rules.

How many questions are on the U.S. citizenship civics test?

The civics test is oral. On the 2008 test the officer asks up to 10 questions from a bank of 100, and you need 6 correct. On the 2025 test the officer asks 20 questions from a bank of 128, and you need 12 correct. Which set applies is decided by your N-400 filing date.

Can I apply for citizenship after three years instead of five?

Yes, if you have been a permanent resident for three years and have been married to and living with the same U.S. citizen for that entire time, and that spouse has been a citizen the whole period. Most other applicants must wait five years. You can usually file up to 90 days before reaching the mark.

Will an arrest or old criminal record stop me from becoming a citizen?

Not always, but it must be handled carefully. USCIS reviews good moral character, and arrests, citations, or unpaid taxes and child support can affect a case even when old or minor. Some offenses can also put your green card at risk. Review the full record with an immigration attorney before filing Form N-400.

Are you ready to become a U.S. citizen?

Check whether you likely meet the requirements to naturalize, then practice the real USCIS civics questions. The practice test loads the correct question bank based on when your application was filed.
